Coordinating family photos doesn't have to be chaotic. With proper planning and organization, you can capture all the important family combinations efficiently and stress-free.
Pre-Wedding Organization Create a Family Photo List
  • Immediate family combinations first
  • Extended family groupings second
  • Special requests (step-families, adoptive families)
  • VIP grandparent photos (they tire easily)
Assign a Family Coordinator Choose someone who:
  • Knows both families well
  • Can speak up and direct people
  • Isn't in many photos themselves
  • Can help gather family members quickly
Timing Strategy Optimal Scheduling Options:
  1. After ceremony, before cocktails (15-20 minutes maximum)
  2. During cocktail hour (while guests enjoy drinks)
  3. Before ceremony (if doing a first look)
Efficient Photo Flow Start with largest groups and work smaller:
  • All family members together
  • Bride's side + couple
  • Groom's side + couple
  • Immediate family only
  • Parents with couple
  • Grandparents with couple
Professional Tips for Success
  • Communicate the list to your photographer 2 weeks prior
  • Keep groups to 8 people maximum when possible
  • Have backup indoor location ready
  • Limit family photos to 20 minutes total
Helpful Resources: The Knot's family photo guide provides excellent templates for organizing large family combinations.
According to WeddingWire's recent survey, couples who organize family photos in advance spend 50% less time on formal portraits and enjoy cocktail hour more.
At Crystal Image Photo, we work with families to create organized, efficient photo sessions that capture everyone beautifully without keeping guests waiting. Let's plan your family photo strategy together.

What Our Clients Are Saying

Pictures were one of my top priorities for my wedding. I spent a lot of time reading through photographers and even contacting some. I was also pretty nervous, I had never been professionally photographed before. Crystal and her team were SO easy to work with and immediately took away the nerves. I trusted her completely and I am so happy I did. Cannot recommend enough!  Ellen - Yorktown VA

If you're looking for an amazing photographer who is relaxed, has experience, and knowledge look no further. Crystal took our engagement and wedding photos. Not only were her photos amazing, but she is extremely responsive to messages and will even help you when planning your big day. It was important to us to work with a photographer who has experience with same sex couples, and Crystal and Casey did a great job capturing everything for my wife and I. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. - Emily - Nellysford, VA
